I often ask people how safe is it for them to say what they really think in their workplace. For example, is it safe for them to say what they really, truly think in meetings or in discussions with their boss or with colleagues?

I've just been re-reading Jim Collin's book Good to Great (I often read a book 2-3 times - maybe I'm a slow learner but I seem to learn or see more the second or third time round!). Collins examines what takes a company from good to great – or more specifically identifies the leadership styles that contribute to the difference.

A comment I occasionally hear from participants at the beginning of a new training programme is... “I did a 3 day workshop on leadership five years ago....I don't know why I need to do another!” (or I've done a diploma in leadership or I've read a few books on leadership etc, etc).

I often talk about being remarkable...being a remarkable leader, being a remarkable educator, being a remarkable parent or simply just being remarkable. Take a minute and ask yourself what the word 'remarkable' means – remarkable.... worth making a remark about.... worth commenting on... worth talking about – but for all the right reasons!

One of the strategies of remarkable leadership is being able to step into your fears. When you observe successful leaders it's easy to think they are fearless because they seem to do the very things the rest of us shy away from, or sometimes even run screaming from!

Often when I talk with people about the word 'leadership', the first thing that springs to mind is well-known people who have made an impact on the world - the Mahatma Gandhis, Mother Theresas and Ed Hilarys of the world. Or they think of CEO's and senior management.
