Leaders are comfortable being uncomfortable!

Leaders are scarce because few people are willing to go through the discomfort that's needed to lead. For example:

  • it's uncomfortable to try something new...to take a risk
  • it's uncomfortable to challenge the status quo
  • it's uncomfortable to stand up in front of strangers
  • it's uncomfortable to put forward a view that might be criticised
  • it's uncomfortable to show how much you care
  • it's uncomfortable to give up your free time to do extra learning & work
Given the choice, most people prefer to avoid the discomfort. And that's what makes those people who do step up and give things a go, even when it's uncomfortable, all the more remarkable and all the more scarce!

I've just spent my Saturday with ten remarkable leaders putting together video clips about leadership (actually make that 13 – because the team we were working with from Nimbus Media were remarkable too!)

It's often said that public speaking is the number one fear...well speaking in front of a video camera can seem just as scary!! Yet each of these remarkable leaders gave up their own time and braved the cameras to air some of their thoughts and observations about leadership on video.

Watching these marvellous leaders reminded me again that leadership is a choice. We can choose the status quo, the safety and the comfort. Or we can choose to take a risk, to make a difference and to leave a legacy of remarkable leadership. And that's what these ten leaders did on Saturday.

In a few weeks I will start releasing their videos on my website and it's my hope that they will encourage discussion and even provoke debate about the subject of leadership in your home and your workplace!

So ask yourself...
  • how comfortable are you at being uncomfortable?
  • would you put your observations & stories about leadership on video for the world to see?
  • when was the last time you took an audacious risk?
Most people can do extraordinary things if they have the confidence or take the risks.
Yet most people don’t. They sit in front of the telly and treat life as if it goes on forever”

what does she have to say?

"believe nothing. No matter where you read it, or who said it, even if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense”
