One of my favourite movies is As Good As It Gets, with Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt. Hunt plays the role of a stressed-out single mother working as a waitress who meets Melvin (played by Nicholson), an obsessive-compulsive, self-absorbed author.
In an unforgettable scene, nearly half-way through the movie, they are sitting together in a restaurant and Carol (Helen Hunt) pleads with Melvin to say just for once… “something nice”. Melvin replies with a completely unexpected comment. He says “you make me want to be a better man”.
It's an amazing line! Think about it. It strikes me that this is what leadership is all about. There's something about being around real leaders that makes us want to be better people.
When I think of the people who make me want to be better, there's:
- Stephanie, because of her total commitment to what she does
- Matt, because of his absolute zeal and passion
- Colin, for his depth of knowledge and incredible expertise, and
- Glenn, for his love of learning
So ask yourself...
- Who makes you want to be a better person?
- What is it about you that makes other people want to be a better person?
- What's your favourite movie – is there a line that makes it memorable?
“In everyone’s lifetime, at sometime, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame
by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for
those people who rekindle the inner spirit”
Albert Schweitzer
