The Power of Questions

Remarkable leaders ask smart questions. A study from the Centre for Creative Leadership identified that one of the keys to successful leadership is a leader's ability to ask great questions and to also create safe opportunities for others to ask questions.

In fact contrary to old wisdom, leaders do not have to have all the answers! Instead effective leaders make it a practice to ask powerful questions and encourage others to ask questions.

Questions can elicit information – but they can also do so much more! Good questions force us to think, they get us engaged and they can focus our attention. Effective leaders can use powerful questions to encourage participation and teamwork, to spur innovation and foster out-of-the-box thinking, empower others, build relationships, solve problems, and much more.

Are you a question-asker? What are your favourite questions? Here's a few of mine:
  • What's been your best mistake in the past month?
  • What inspires you?
  • What gets in the way of doing a great job?
  • If you could change one thing about your role (our team, our organisation etc) what would it be?
  • What makes you proud to work for this organization?
  • What brings you joy in your work?
  • What's something you've learned in the last week?
  • Are we being honest with ourselves?
  • What should we stop doing? What should we start doing? What should we continue doing?
  • Are we fully utilizing your talents?
  • What can I do differently to best assist you?
  • How do you like to be recognised for great work?

the quality of my life is determined by the quality of the questions I consistently ask myself”
