Do you know what you look like...I mean I know you know what you look like, - but do you know what you look like when you are communicating with others?
As a leader, your words, your voice and your body language are key tools of your trade. Every time you communicate, your voice and words along with your gestures and facial expressions are your means of conveying who you are and what you mean....for example, whether you are interested, listening, aware, ethical, trustworthy, etc. Or maybe bored, biased, judgmental, oblivious and disrespectful!
I've been sitting in on a few meetings lately and have been astonished by the verbal and non-verbal body language I have observed. The sighs, the eye rolling, the disinterest, cutting off people mid-sentence, talking over people and don't get me started on the amount of texting or people taking phone calls during meetings (and even worse, staying in the meeting room and talking on their phone!!)
As leaders, our behaviour is on display 24/7. Are you are aware of the messages you are sending when you don't think you are sending any?
So ask yourself....
- If your behaviour was videoed at the next meeting you attend would you be proud of the behaviour you displayed?
- What jargon and/or glib platitudes do you use?
- What do you convey through your voice, words, facial expressions and body language?
“A new idea is delicate. It can be killed by a sneer or a yawn; it can be stabbed to
death by a joke, or worried to death by a frown on the right person’s brow”
