Are great leaders born or made? There is longstanding debate around this one. One school of thought suggests that leaders are a few select people who are born with a unique set of skills that enable them to become natural leaders. The other school of thought suggests that leaders are made – that is they learn, grow and develop into great leaders through the experiences they have, the learning they undertake, the mistakes they make and the people they associate with.
I think that great leaders, like great athletes, are made. Like any skill, leadership requires constant practice. I believe most people have the potential to become outstanding leaders – the real issue is that leadership competency (like any set of skills) takes time, energy, commitment and practice to develop. Perhaps the reason we have such a shortage of outstanding leaders is that only a few are willing to pay this price!
So, what do you think...
- are great leaders born or made? what about great parents? great managers? great partners?
- do most people have the potential to be great leaders?
- why do you think there is a shortage of great leaders? (do you even think there is a shortage!)
- are you willing to pay the price?
“Leaders aren't born they are made. And they are made just like everything else, through hard work. And that's the price we'll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal”
Vince Lombardi
