Are you choking on mokitas?

I love finding out about new or unusual words and phrases. One of my favourites at the moment is alethophobia – I came across it in Susan Scott's latest book Fierce Leadership. Alethophobia is 'an intense, abnormal or illogical fear of the truth' something I suspect more than a few leaders suffer from! Scott also uses a fascinating phrase when she asks if you or your team are 'choking on mokitas'. Mokitas is a Papua New Guinean term for 'that which everyone knows but know one will speak of'.

One of my other favourites which I heard from Glenn Capelli many years ago is neotony. Netony is 'aging, yet retaining the childlike behaviour traits of spontaneity, creativity and a sense of wonder...what we add as we age, is wisdom'. This is something I would definitely like to suffer from!!

So ask yourself...
  • what's your favourite word or phrase?
  • do you or your team suffer from alethophobia?
  • are you adding wisdom as you age?

the secret to my long and productive life is my neotonous behaviour”
